The noises were always heard between the hours of 5:20 and 7:30am. Not every morning, but when they were audible, there was no mistaking them...

Court told of idol that appeared in a bowl   More recollections of black magic followed at the Hasleza Ishak murder trial yesterday, when fourth accused Rahim Ismail told of how he saw an idol not bigger than a palm appear in a white bowl while he was casting a spell to rid the Raja DiHilir's palace of supernatural forces. The witness said the object which was yellowish, resembled a Siamese idol and was in a meditative pose with hands clasped and knees bent against the chest while on its head was a sharp object pointing upwards...

Think someone's staring at you?   "Sixth sense" may be biological. If Rupert Sheldrake is right, at least seven out of 10 of you reading this article have felt the prickly sensation of being stared at. Maybe you've also had feelings of foreboding that later proved true. Or perhaps you've been startled to answer the phone and hear the loved one you were just thinking about. Far from paranormal, these experiences are rooted in our biology, says Sheldrake, a Cambridge-trained biochemist and maverick thinker who's been called "a scientific heretic who refuses to be burnt at the stake"...

No one has ever asked Emily to leave. That's because Emily, people in this town say, is a ghost, one of many who make this summer resort town their home...

Nevertheless, saddened spiritualists became happy mediums when they detected a supernatural female presence in the chamber...

Chatting to yourself on the phone   Some people report experiencing paranormal phenomena over the telephone. And it makes you wonder - how long will it be before the first spooky encounters via Internet or text messaging? One day, her elder daughter telephoned to say that her young sister's car had broken down. Jill then rang her old home hoping to contact her son who still lived there at that time...

Let's get metaphysical   Ashland gallerys out-of-this-world exhibit lands next to earthly library. Theyre hee-ere the little green men are everywhere. Theyre on T-shirts and pins, in the form of plush dolls, action figures, candles and candy dispensers. The odd faces with oblong eyes even adorn a roll of toilet paper. Rows upon rows of alien-themed curios roughly numbering 1,000 pieces have welcomed visitors to this Ashland gallery over the past month. Pleasanton veterans dowse for terrorists   As war with Iraq heightens fears of terrorist attacks, Pleasanton veterans groups think they've found a way to address the threat: the ancient practice of dowsing. Skeptics scoff at dowsers' claims that they can locate water, tunnels, pipes - even missing people and pets - guided by nothing but a stick or rod and their intuition. Nonetheless, local vets have invited a Virginia man to teach an introductory course in dowsing next month at the Veterans Memorial Building in Pleasanton...

Effect of mind over body still baffles   The idea that the mind affects the body goes back to the ancient Greeks. Hippocrates, a physician who's known as the father of medicine, had the idea that thoughts produce certain reactions in the body. You'd think that 2,400 years later, we'd know a lot about this mind-body connection. Patience, patience. Scientists still are trying to prove what Hippocrates supposed...

Astral travelers touch down in Beirut   The CIA supposedly did it, and probably the KGB. Now a small group of Beirutis meets every week to learn how to do it. Astral traveling, or remote viewing as it is also called, is just one form of spiritual experience, like transcendental meditation and reiki, that is becoming increasingly popular in Lebanon. According to supporters, a trained remote viewer can make his energy leave his body and use it to go wherever he wants. He can check out his friend's bedroom, visit outer space or even find hidden nuclear sites, as the CIA attempted to do in the late 1970s. "It works, everybody can learn how to do it," says Fouad, a practitioner of astral travel...
