Some time ago during the Web 1.0 boom I created my first domain after my consulting company name - essive.com (actually the domain was registered on May 18, 2001 - named after Essive Innovations). It's hard to believe that 25+ years have passed since that day along with the vast changes in the world and that I've kept this domain all of that time.

I had no idea at that time just what "semantics and meaning" would turn out to be by 2023 and beyond! At that time I was deep into RDS/OWL ontology mapping thinking the web 2.0+ would become a more interconnected map of knowledge. Little did I understand how the power of capital markets (and advertising) in cyberspace would shape the future. History repeated itself and is doing it again with AI.

I can't even believe this domain has been a part of me for so many years. But, one thing I need to keep from those days is the site where I found the word for my old consultancy:

essive: indicating a temporary state of being - from The Phrontistery: Obscure Words and Vocabulary Resources

In 1999 I scanned the Phrontistery list in the Dictionary of Obscure Words for days until I stumbled upon essive. It just resonated with me. And to this day, I still think The Phrontistery is amazing!

Yes, Essive is back after many years. There's much to do yet to get this blog back into shape. Stay tuned (you can learn more here ). But, in the meantime, the layout will be slowly adjusting to my needs. So, hopefully, this will start to bake out much better.

Why Blogger?

You might be wondering why I chose Google's Blogger platform for this site vs. something like Wordpress or the more recent popular microblogging formats. I was a very early adopter of Blogger back in 2001/02 that has stuck with me for years. Over time, I've become quite used to the odd XML layout syntax that perplexes most web developers. Plus, having the ability to truly customize the CSS along with Javascript without constraints was a big win for me. In fact, while I was still frustrated back in the 2000s with how Blogger mixed its large, combined CSS and XML/XSD template format along with its embedded data access commands, I was pleasantly surprised when they announced a new format in 2010 only to be even more confused with its complexity. Regardless, I've adjusted over time—but not without reservations (did I just use an em dash?) I do find it odd that Google hasn't modified the underlying syntax in over 15 years.
